Ambassador Michael Kirby, accompanied by his wife Sara and daughter Elizabeth, donated new toys, clothing and medical supplies to the 58 children of Cernoleuca Orphanage in Donduseni Raion on January 19. The Ambassador noted that the donation, worth more than $2,000, will help to improve the children's quality of life.
The visit was arranged by the U.S. Embassy’s Bilateral Affairs Office (BAO). Among the donors were the White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary, North Carolina, which gave $1,600 to buy sweaters, socks, sport clothes and mittens from factories in Chisinau. Military staff from the U.S. Embassy’s Defense Attaché Office and Office of Defense Cooperation donated another $400. In addition, members of the North Carolina Air National Guard arranged for the toy donation.
The state of North Carolina has had a civilian partnership with Moldova for the past decade. The partnership involves cooperation in many fields, such as health care, education, government reform, business, arts and agriculture. The relationship has led to many projects, including exchanges of doctors and dentists, donations of computers, books and medical supplies, student internships, business opportunities, adoptions and interactive university classes between schools in North Carolina and Moldova.
