Music lovers fill concert hall for "Spring in America" concert

March 18, 2008

A full house of music lovers joined the acting PAO Sharon Ketchum at the third concert of the series "American Music in Moldova" on Friday, March 14. The Chisinau Philharmonic Orchestra, led this time by the North Carolina Symphony Assistant Conductor Joan Landry, performed the works of American composers Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Edward MacDowell, and Aaron Copland. The theme of this concert was "Spring in America" featuring Bertnstein's overture Candide, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess Fantasy for violin and orchestra, MacDowell's Concert 2 for piano and orchestra, and Copland's Appalachian Spring. The concert featured violin soloist Alexandra Conunov and piano soloist Raisa Socodei, who impressed the audience with their extraordinarily skillful and inspired playing.   The talent and enthusiasm shown by Landry and the orchestra were contagious, and the entire audience clapped in time with the rousing finale, Stars and Stripes Forever.

Two more concerts are planned in Tiraspol and one more in Chisinau in the "American Music in Moldova" series, highlighting more American composers in May. The concert series is funded by a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau and realized in collaboration with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Chisinau.
