April 12, 2006

A delegation from the U.S. state of North Carolina was in Moldova the week of April 10 to hold the annual meeting of the North Carolina-Moldova Bilateral Affairs Committee
Committee members also visited Hospice North Carolina in Zubresti.

A delegation from the U.S. state of North Carolina was in Moldova the week of April 10 to hold the annual meeting of the North Carolina-Moldova Bilateral Affairs Committee.  The opening session of the Committee was held on April 11, with U.S. Ambassador Heather Hodges, Minister of Health and Social Protection Ion Ababii, Moldovan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valeriu Ostalep and North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall participating in the session.  Committee members discussed trade, business, humanitarian, medical, academic, education, and cultural issues.

On April 13 delegation members toured Holy Trinity Hospital, where they viewed medical equipment donated from North Carolina.  This equipment is part of a nearly $500,000 shipment of medical equipment and supplies that arrived in Chisinau in March and is being distributed to hospitals and clinics around Moldova.  A visit to School Number 12 in Chisinau followed.  At the school,  the group inspected a computer lab that was set up with computers donated from North Carolina.  Nearly 300 computers have been distributed to schools around the country so far.  Committee members also visited Hospice North Carolina in Zubresti.  A hospice in Greensboro, North Carolina, along with private donors (Greensboro Rotary Club) in the state, provided funding for the renovation of the hospice in Zubresti, which has been named in honor of the state.  The committee presented a North Carolina flag flown over the State Capitol building in Raleigh to the director of the hospice.

The North Carolina delegation also held meetings with other high officials and educational institutions to discuss potential future projects.
