Statement on the Incident at Varnitsa

The Embassy of the United States of America condemns the action by Transnistrian forces at Varnitsa on April 21.  The seizure of the harbor facility was an unjustified and aggressive act that could have had extremely dangerous consequences.  We call on the Transnistrian authorities immediately to return any property taken and release any persons still being detained, and to refrain from further unilateral actions.

The Embassy appreciates the calm and responsible reaction of the Moldovan authorities to this provocation, and calls on the members of the Joint Control Commission and the participants in the settlement negotiations to take appropriate steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
