Top officials from the Government of Moldova and the U.S. Embassy opened the Center for Combating Trafficking in Persons (CCTIP) on Friday, April 27. Ambassador Michael Kirby, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government Vitalie Vrabie and Interior Minister Gheorghe Papuc delivered remarks. The event was widely covered by all media.
The Center, the first of its kind in the region, is set up on a task force model, bringing law enforcement and security officers from a number of government agencies under one roof to work together against the scourge of trafficking. As part of a worldwide $50 million anti-trafficking initiative announced by President Bush in 2003, the U.S. Government has committed $1.9 million to the CCTIP. The funding covered the cost of renovating, furnishing, and equipping the center. Technical assistance and staff training is also covered under the initiative.
