Ambassador Kirby helps launch independent healthcare center system (29 Apr 2008)

U.S. Ambassador Michael Kirby and Moldovan Health Minister Larisa Catrinici attended the opening of the first of 41 independent primary healthcare centers in Moldova.  The center in Saratenii Vechi, Telenesti raion, opened on April 23, 2008.  This new center marks Moldova’s transition from a specialized healthcare to a healthcare system focused on primary care.  The Ambassador used the opportunity to donate office equipment to the renovated care center.

The transition, supported by the Moldova Good Governance Country Threshold Program under the Millenium Challenge Account (MGTCP), is part of a wider healthcare reform.  As part of this plan, 41 primary care units under regional and local hospitals across Moldova will be transformed into independent primary healthcare and family medicine centers.  These centers will provide preventive treatment, the main focus of the new Moldovan healthcare system.  Under the same reform, over 1,250 Moldovan family doctors were also trained to provide qualified assistance to their patients, with the support of the MGTCP and the European Commission funds
