U.S. Provides Training for Moldovan Law Enforcement in Investigation Skills (23 May 2008)

Thirty Moldovan law enforcement officers attended a special U.S.-sponsored 2-week course on combating drug trafficking.  Fifteen investigation officers from the Moldovan Customs service and fifteen anti-drug operatives from the Moldovan Ministry of Interior attended the course in Chisinau.  Special agents and analysts from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration taught various aspects of combating drug trafficking, including criminal and financial investigations, substance analysis, operative work and ethics.

At the graduation ceremony on May 23, Ambassador Michael Kirby reiterated the commitment of the U.S. Government to help Moldovan law enforcement develop the necessary skills to effectively protect the citizens of Moldova.  Recent seizures of narcotics being shipped through Moldova demonstrated the importance of anti-drug trafficking efforts as part of this mission.

Officers from five law enforcement and security agencies with the Center for Combating Trafficking in Persons gained knowledge and skills to effectively investigate and prosecute public corruption cases at a five-day Public Corruption Course conducted on May 19–23, 2008.  Ambassador Michael D. Kirby participated in the graduation ceremony on May 23.

The five-day program, taught by special agents from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations, discussed the challenges associated with conducting investigations against public officials complicit in human trafficking, and methods to protect the integrity of all levels of public service.

The course is the forth training course for the Anti-Trafficking Center in 2008 funded by the U.S. Embassy’s law enforcement assistance program.
