“Carolina de Nord,” the first hospice in Moldova, was officially opened on Thursday, June 1, in the village of Zubresti, in Straseni Raion. The hospice will provide care for the physical and emotional needs of terminally ill patients of all ages.
Dr. Vasile Suruceanu, Director of the Hospice, greeted the large crowd of guests, some of whom had traveled from as far away as the United States for the celebration. Prominent members of Moldova’s medical community came out in force to show support for the new center.
The city of Greensboro, North Carolina, which was instrumental in making the hospice a reality, sent representatives from the Greensboro Hospice and the Greensboro Rotary Club. Both organizations made substantial contributions, from raising funds to renovate the hospice building to training the hospice staff. Patricia Ashworth, of Greensboro Hospice, who has traveled to Moldova many times to train the hospice staff, spoke at the opening, citing the many and varied contributions of both the Moldovan and the North Carolina partners.
The hospice is just one of many projects overseen by the North Carolina Bilateral Affairs Committee, which has had a partnership with Moldova since 1999. The Committee focuses on developing relationships in the areas of education, culture, medicine, business, government, and humanitarian assistance.
