Ambassador Chaudhry opens Prosecutorial Seminar
Ambassador Asif J. Chaudhry presented opening remarks at a seminar for prosecutors and investigators on June 11 at the National Institute of Justice on best practices in combating trafficking in persons and related crimes. Along with Ambassador Chaudhry, Eugenia Fistican, Director of the National Institute of Justice and Martin Wyss, Head of the International Organization for Migration in Moldova, welcomed the participants. Noting the complex, trans-border nature of these crimes, Ambassador Chaudhry said: "For successful prosecutions, it is crucial to have close teamwork between investigators and prosecutors. There must also be cooperation between source and destination countries to ensure that evidence is shared and that victim-witnesses are handled properly." Ambassador Chaudhry underscored the strong commitment of the United States in addressing these crimes, whether for sexual or labor exploitation.
In addition to covering the law and investigative strategies, presentations also covered the role of psychologists in dealing with victim-witnesses throughout the investigative and court proceedings. This was the third in a series of professional development workshops for prosecutors and investigators on the subject of combating trafficking in persons and related crimes. The two-day seminar was organized by the U.S. Embassy, IOM and the Moldovan National Institute of Justice.
