Media Event launches Operation Provide Hope in Balti, Moldova

The United States has donated $21.7 million dollars worth of medical equipment and supplies to medical facilities in Moldova through the Operation Provide Hope program.

This represents half a million kilograms of equipment and supplies and includes monitoring equipment for intensive care, X-ray equipment, film processing technology, anesthesia machines, and sterilization equipment, as well as bandages, linens, syringes, and other consumables.

The equipment was provided to medical facilities in four cities in Moldova: Balti, Tiraspol, Cahul and Chisinau.  In addition, 66 primary health care kits will be distributed to each raion, and 20 dental packages will be provided to rural health care facilities.

The humanitarian assistance was loaded in trucks and transported to Moldova from U.S. Army Medical Material Center Europe (USAMMCE) in Germany.  The last of the 100 truckloads arrived in Chisinau on Monday, September 15.

Each truck was unloaded by Operation Provide Hope team members.  Additional American team members are busy installing equipment, while others train Moldovan medical workers to use and maintain the equipment. Some team members will remain in Chisinau for several weeks to ensure that the equipment is installed and functional and that local medical personnel are prepared to use it.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau said "the Embassy is very pleased to be part of this humanitarian effort.  But in fact, this project is just one part within the nearly $200 million in humanitarian supplies that the American people have provided since 1992 to Moldova."

The shipment is the third and largest Operation Provide Hope donation to Moldova. The United States first donated medical equipment to Moldova in 1994, with a second donation in 2000.
