Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Kramer Meets Alumni, Holds Media Roundtable

July 27, 2006

David Kramer meets alumni and Media representatives
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, David  Kramer had a round table with Alumni and local Media representatives.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, David  Kramer, who was visiting Chisinau in his role as U.S. representative in the Transnistrian negotiations, took an hour off his extremely busy schedule to meet with a large group of alumni of U.S. State Department exchange programs. The lively discussion at the Alumni Resource Center focused on the issues faced by alumni upon their return to Moldova.  Many of the participants made constructive suggestions for possible programs to help alumni readjust to conditions in their native country and to support them in staying and making a difference.  Many also spoke about the great positive impact the experience had had on their lives. The encounter was useful for the participants who got a chance to meet with and share ideas with such a high-profile visitor.  The session was also useful for DAS Kramer, who learned first-hand of the results of exchange programs.

Following the alumni meeting, DAS Kramer had a media roundtable with six journalists from Moldova and Transnistria in a bid to explain the purpose of his current visit and to inform them of the results of his meetings with Moldovan leaders.  In the 45-minute wide-ranging discussion, DAS Kramer provided clear and candid explanations to satisfy some of the tough questions put by the journalists.  The media chat was broadcast on Radio Free Europe and long articles appeared in the newspapers that were invited to the event.  Thus, a large cross-section of the Moldovan public became aware of the state of U.S.-Moldovan relations.
