August 17, 2006

The swearing-in ceremony for the 18th group of U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers in Moldova took place on August 17, 2006 at the National Philharmonic Hall in Chisinau.

U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires, Ambassador Rudolf Perina and Moldovan Minister of Health Ion Ababii attended and delivered speeches.

A total of 35 volunteers took their oaths at the ceremony. Sixteen members of this group will teach Health Education in schools around the country, while 19 will teach English, working with students ranging from second grade through college.  In total, approximately 130 Peace Corps Volunteers are currently serving in Moldova.

The ceremony marks the end of ten weeks of training and the start of two years of service for the Peace Corps Volunteers.  The training for the group was conducted in the Orhei area.  Trainees lived with Moldovan host families, took intensive language lessons in Romanian or Russian, and had classes on Moldovan culture and in teaching methods.
