Ambassador Michael Kirby and Moldovan Vice-Minister of Health Boris Golovin attended a ceremony on Monday, September 10, during which 7000 volumes of medical books and magazines were turned over to the library of Moldova’s Medical University Library in Chisinau.
The project was made possible through the Moldova-North Carolina bilateral project and the active participation of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova. The idea was the brainchild of North Carolina medical librarians Donna Flake and Diane Darrow, who were present during the ceremony.
The collection contains books from all medical subject areas. They are in various levels of complexity, which makes them useful for first through sixth year students, residents and practicing doctors. It also includes books that are useful in theory classes, but most of the books and journals contain information based on the latest medical research. The success of this program is the result of a collaborative effort. Medical librarians in Moldova and North Carolina carefully compiled the books and journals, and the Moldovan librarians approved the collection so that the university library received only items it needed. All of the books and journals cover specific needs of the library.
