Ambassador Michael D. Kirby delivered closing remarks and handed out certificates to 40 graduates of a U.S. Embassy course on terrorism financing and money laundering at the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Academy on Friday, September 15.

The Ambassador told the participants that, with the knowledge they had acquired in the course, they would be playing a significant role in the global war on terrorism.

The five-day course, funded by the Department of State and conducted by FBI instructors, was held at the Stefan cel Mare Police Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.  The participants included representatives from not only the Interior Ministry, but also the Ministry of Finance, the National Bank, the Customs Service, the Prosecutor General’s office, and other Moldovan government agencies.  The Principal of the Police Academy, Colonel Constantin Boesteanu also attended the ceremony.

The goals of the seminar were to provide a working-level familiarity with the fundamentals of terrorist financing, and money laundering.  Another aim was to encourage inter-agency collaboration in combating such crimes.

Various specialized equipment, including computers, will be donated to participating agencies to complement the theoretical instruction received at the seminar.
