Ambassador Michael D. Kirby made a two-day trip to the Gagauzian Autonomous Territory of the Republic of Moldova, traveling to both Comrat and Ceadir Lunga to participate in a number of official events and visits. On October 10th the Ambassador opened the third American Corner in Moldova, in partnership with Ceadir Lunga Municipal Library.
While in Ceadir Lunga, the Ambassador visited four city development projects undertaken by the mayor's office in conjunction with the Local Government Reform Project (LGRP), a USAID-funded program. He also toured a flour processing plant, which is in the process of being modernized with significant American investment, as well as a horse breeding farm. During his trip, the Ambassador had meetings with several of the registered candidates for the Bashkan (governor) elections, to be held in December of this year, as well as with members of the Gagauz Election Commission, underlining the importance of open, fair, democratic, and transparent elections.
