Ambassador Chaudhry Opens Residence for U.S. Elections Commemoration

Americans and Moldovans joined together in the early morning of November 5 at U.S. Ambassador Asif Chaudhry's residence to celebrate the November 4th American presidential election.  Even a 7am start time didn't dampen the enthusiasm of participants as they viewed the results of the vote and discussed the potential impact of this election on the United States, Moldova and the world.

Following Barack Obama's victory, Ambassador Chaudhry stated: "This election is a historic event, which reaffirms that America is a country in which anything is possible." He also noted that the sign of a true democracy is that the country will now come together behind President-Elect Obama.  This message reflected Obama's acceptance speech in which he stressed that he will be a president for all Americans, not just those who supported him.  Similarly, Senator McCain told his supporters that it is now time to come together behind Mr. Obama.

In addition to viewing the results on television, the Moldovan politicians, academic leaders, NGO representatives and students in attendance all had the chance to vote in a mock election and discuss the electoral process and outcome with Americans present.
