More than 200 students and members of the faculty were present on Thursday, November 8 at the Moldovan Academy of Public Administration, to hear Ambassador Michael Kirby deliver a lecture on the U.S. view regarding Moldova’s place in the world.
In a 20 minute speech, the Ambassador carefully and methodically laid out his thesis that Moldova’s place is in Europe historically, geographically, culturally, and linguistically. He said, that being a fact, it is up to Moldova and Moldovans to decide what kind of a relationship they want to have with their general European neighborhood. During the lively question and answer period that followed, the audience put tough questions before the Ambassador which he answered expertly. The event was covered by two television stations and two national news agencies. The Academy of Public Administration is the institution of higher learning, under the office of the President of Moldova, where public administrators are trained and retrained. It also serves as a university that accords Masters and Doctorates to regular students. The Academy has hosted U.S. Fulbright scholars during the past two years.
