Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy Visits Moldova, Discusses Media Freedom Issues

On November 21, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) for Public Diplomacy in Europe and Eurasia, Colleen Graffy, made a one-day visit to Chisinau to discuss media freedom issues with a variety of audiences. During her visit, DAS Graffy had several meetings, roundtables and interviews. First she met Moldovan media leaders and discussed recent media incidents and the latest positive achievements of the Moldovan media NGOs.

DAS Graffy also gave two interviews for PRO TV and TV 7 Channels, speaking about the principles and the importance of media freedom. She discussed blogging freedom issues with active Moldovan bloggers during a lunch. Ms. Graffy also met with Galina Bulat, the Vice Minister of Education to discuss Exchange Programs issues, after which she held an engaging discussion with a select group of alumni (FLEX, Ben Franklin). This is DAS Graffy's second visit to Moldova; the first one was in February 2007. As a result of this visit, ideas for new activities and projects to support the public diplomacy and public relations in Moldova were generated.
