Ambassador Chaudhry Visits Tiraspol to Meet local Officials

On November 24, U.S. Ambassador Asif J. Chaudhry made his first visit to Tiraspol to meet the chairman of the local legislature, Yevgeny Shevchuk, to discuss the current socio-economic situation in the region and possible ways of normalizing Moldo-Transnistrian relations. During his meeting with Vladimir Yastrebchak, the official responsible for "foreign relations", Ambassador Chaudhry confirmed that the U.S. is ready to help Transnistria reconstruct its roads with MCC assistance.

The project envisages rehabilitation of two portions of the European transport corridor: Platonovo-Dubossary and Bicioc-Ghura Bicului that has the goal to facilitate the movement of people and cargo in the region.  Amb. Chaudhry also met with local mass media in the OSCE Office.  He told the journalists that U.S. policy is quite clear: Washington is absolutely confident that Moldova must be a united, free and prosperous country, and that the best method of resolving the conflict with Transnistria is through negotiations in the "5+2" format, in which all participating sides can achieve a consensus.  This visit was widely covered by Transnistrian media.
