On December 15, 2006 Moldova and the United States signed a $24.7 million Millennium Challenge Corporation Threshold Program agreement aimed at reducing government corruption in Moldova.
U.S. Ambassador Michael Kirby and USAID Regional Director Earl Gast, along with Premier Vasile Tarlev, Vice Premier Zinaida Grechianiy, other Moldovan officials, participated in the signing ceremony.
MCC Threshold Program funds will finance training and technical assistance to nongovernmental organizations to monitor government anti-corruption reform efforts. They will also fund a public-private working group which will issue recommendations on increasing the role of mass media in monitoring anti-corruption reforms in Moldova. The Program will also reform and strengthen the Government’s primary anti-corruption agency, the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption.
