Ambassador Kirby Rounds Up 2007 Events in Interview to Radio Moldova

In an interview to Radio Moldova on December 19, Ambassador Kirby assessed the stage of US-Moldovan relations in 2007 and plans for development in the coming year. He emphasized that the signing and gradual implementation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation Threshold Program to fight corruption was a major step for Moldova. He expressed his hope that the Moldovan Government will complete its application for the full-fledged MCC Compact aimed at addressing a wider range of development issues in the country. The Ambassador also noted health care and poor quality of potable water as his personal major concerns for Moldova that he will continue addressing in 2008.
Ambassador Kirby reiterated the US Government’s continued support for Moldova’s advancement of democratic and economic reform, as these are the best way to ensure higher living standards for Moldovans, and to achieve the goal of integrating in the European Union. He mentioned the importance the United States adheres to the 5+2 format of Transnistrian settlement talks as the only acceptable context for identifying a final solution to the conflict.
