Justice Paul Newby from the North Carolina Supreme Court visits Moldova

On Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 Associate Justice Paul Newby from the Supreme Court of North Carolina Newby visited the Cahul Court of Appeals where he was hosted by the Court Chairman Dumitru Chebac, while familiarizing himself with the Moldovan justice system, its prospective and challenges. “Moldova has a breathtaking beauty, its people are even more beautiful than the country. The judges I met were open about the challenges that they face and were encouraged by the open discussions about the US system. We share the goal of seeking justice for all and the application of the rule of law,” said Justice Newby.

While in Cahul, Justice Newby also attended the graduation ceremony for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative legal clinics from Balti, Comrat, Cahul and Tiraspol and congratulated the students on the occasion of their graduation. These legal clinics provide students with practical skills to complement their university legal education and also provide the public with much-needed access to scarce legal services.

The Bilateral Affairs Office of the US Embassy has facilitated collaboration efforts between various North Carolina and Moldova entities mainly in the health care, education and humanitarian realm. This is a new endeavor, intended to link the Moldovan legal community, to include students and specialists, with North Carolina law schools, with assistance of the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Moldova.

Ms. Leslie Reed, ABA Rule of Law Initiative Moldova Rule of Law Legal Specialist said: "The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Moldova hopes that Justice Newby's visit will inspire other members of the North Carolina legal community to become active in program initiatives and exchanges of information with Moldovan law students and with the Moldovan legal community in general, to further the goals of the North Carolina/Moldova partnership program."

Justice Newby visited Moldova over the course of a week while participating at a Bible Study Camp organized by the Emanuel Christian Church in Cahul, Moldova. Together with other 25 members of the Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, Justice Newby and the camp attendees combined bible studies and outdoor activities, to include training sessions for basketball, volleyball, American football, etc
