American Corners
"American Corners" were first established in Russia nearly a decade ago, as an initiative by the U.S. Department of State to expand outreach throughout the country. Since 2000, the U.S. has launched 245 American Corners in approximately 60 other countries. American Corners serve as regional resource centers for information and programs highlighting American culture, history, current events, and government. American Corners act as a regional repository for the use of American-themed books, videos, DVDs, and CD-ROMs; they also provide free internet access. Furthermore, they serve as platforms for a variety of programs, including discussion groups, seminars, poster exhibits, and meetings with U.S. and local specialists on a wide range of topics. The “Corners” are operated as partnerships. The U.S. provides equipment and materials, while host institutions provide space and staffing.
Currently there are three American Corners in Moldova--in Balti, Ceadir Lunga, and Ungheni. The Corners were opened in partnership with municipal and rayon libraries. For contact information, please see below:
