Statement by Tom Casey, Acting Spokesman of the U.S. Department of State, on the implementation of Ukrainian – Moldovan Customs Protocol

The U.S. welcomes the decision by Ukraine to implement the customs agreement signed December 30, 2005 with Moldova.  Implementation of the Customs Protocol is an important step toward secure borders and a lasting resolution of the Transnistria conflict.  The U.S. calls on Transnistrian authorities to refrain from taking any actions in response to this decision that would restrict legitimate trade. 

The U.S. remains committed to finding a solution to the Transnistria conflict that guarantees Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and looks forward to resumption of the next round of negotiations April 4-5.
