Press Release
The U.S. Department of State has released its annual report “Supporting Human Rights and Democracy: The U.S. Record 2005 – 2006.”
This publication serves as a companion to the annual “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2005,” released earlier in March.
The “Country Reports” document the human rights situation in 196 countries, while this latest report highlights the programs and actions the United States has initiated to assist countries in improving their human rights record. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said: “This report describes the many ways American foreign policy helped citizens and governments around the globe turn their increasing demands for human rights and democracy into programs of action.”
The section of the report on Moldova underlines the U.S. strategy for promoting human rights and democracy, focused on strengthening the rule of law, good governance, independent media and civil society; promoting free and fair elections; combating trafficking in persons; and supporting a just and speedy resolution to the conflict in Transnistria.
