We have observed with interest the formation of the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections, through which different Moldovan NGOs are working together to monitor the upcoming election campaign and the elections. We welcome and encourage the widest possible participation of civil society organizations in this process, which is vitally important for a well-functioning society.

We also welcome President Voronin's commitment to democratic processes and press freedom as expressed in the initiative announced on July 5. We encourage all political parties and institutions, as well as civil society organizations, to work together to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
