2007 Press Releases
PRESS STATEMENT
September 11, 2007
The United States of America has a humanitarian commitment to help people around the world who suffer the consequences of disasters.
We are deeply concerned about the welfare of people across the entire territory of Moldova who are suffering because of this year’s drought. Based on a request from the Government of Moldova, we are taking modest, immediate steps to help alleviate some of the consequences of this disaster by buying $350,000 worth of seeds for the Fall planting. These seeds will be donated directly to some of the most affected farmers, starting this Friday.
Contrary to a press report published on Monday, as a rule we do not give disaster funds to governments, nor do we work through governments to deliver such assistance. In cases of humanitarian disasters, we offer our assistance directly to the people affected by the disaster working with international, American, or local organizations.
