STATEMENT ВУ SEAN MCCORMACK, SPOKESMAN

U.S. Department of State
Office of the Spokesman
Rejecting the Independence Referendum in Moldova's Transnistria Region

The U.S. does not recognize the independence referendum held yesterday in the Transnistrian region of Moldova. We welcome similar statements rejecting thev referendum bу the European Union member states, and the Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

As the intemational community has made clear, Transnistria is а part of Moldova, and yesterday's efforts bу the Transnistrian regime should not bе recognized as anything other than аn attempt to destabilize Moldova. Wе encourage аll parties to retum to the international negotiations оn Transnistria bу the middle of October.

The United States is а steadfast friend of Moldova and аll of its people, including those living in the Transnistrian region of the country.
