Former Ambassador Pamela Hyde Smith Speeches
Ambassador Pamela Hyde Smith New Year Remarks 2001-2002
I am very pleased to offer all Moldovan citizens a New Year’s Greeting on this, my first New Year as Ambassador of the United States to Moldova. I have three primary goals as Ambassador: to support the Global Campaign against Terrorism, to assist Moldova in resolving the Transnistrian conflict, and to support Moldova as it continues on the path it has selected toward democracy and economic reform.
The American people and I are truly grateful to all Moldovans for the sympathy that they have shown my country and my fellow citizens in the aftermath of the events of September 11. We were touched by the flowers and messages left at the Embassy in September. The United States appreciates the support and cooperation your government has provided to the coalition against terrorism. President Voronin’s recent presidential decree of a national moment of silence on the recent three-month anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11 is a reconfirmation of your solidarity with the United States and with the global coalition against terrorism.
The past year has been an eventful one for Moldova. We congratulate Moldova on its admission to the World Trade Organization and the Stability Pact in the past year. I recognize that your economic situation continues to be difficult, but the United States is committed to assisting the Government of Moldova in the continuing efforts it has undertaken to forge a vibrant, market economy, solidify the legal and economic reforms that will reinforce your democratic structures, and together enhance the well-being of every citizen of Moldova.
This year has also witnessed Russia’s fulfillment of its commitments for this year under the Istanbul Accord. This is an important step. We are supporting the fulfillment of next year's commitments with contributions to the international voluntary fund to subsidize withdrawal and destruction of weapons in Transnistria. We are committed to the territorial integrity of Moldova and will continue to pursue by every means possible a resolution of the Transnistria conflict that will benefit all citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
Va dorim tuturor un an plin de succese. La multi ani si sarbatori fericite!
