Former U.S. Ambassador Heather M. Hodges Speeches
U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Heather M. Hodges’ Statement on Independence Day
June 30, 2004
On July 4th, Americans throughout the world celebrate the birth of our nation, which was founded on the idea of “government of the people, by the people, [and] for the people.” This idea has become an integral part of democracies throughout the world, including Moldova. And although the principle of empowering the people is vital, it is not easy to make it a reality. This holds true for both old and new democracies.
The late President Ronald Reagan once said, “Democracy is not a fragile flower, [but] it still needs cultivating.” I like this quotation because it illustrates the idea that creating a stable and prosperous democracy is a process -- that needs constant nurturing.
This is my first 4th of July here in Moldova. I cannot believe that nine months have passed since I arrived in this beautiful country. I have had the opportunity to travel to many regions of Moldova and to gain a greater appreciation for the programs we support here.
- I have been impressed by the Peace Corps Volunteers, who donate two years of their lives, sharing their skills and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
- I have attended the openings of several farm stores and agribusinesses supported through USAID projects. These were particularly exciting events since we believe that the success of private agricultural enterprise is an essential element for a prosperous future of Moldova.
- I have been to schools whose students are provided with a healthy lunch each day through a school lunch program supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, enabling the students to focus on their studies.
- I have participated in discussions -- most recently the Second Annual U.S.-Moldova Joint Economic Task Force -- aimed at improving the business climate in Moldova for both foreign and domestic investment.
- And I have observed the support provided by American organizations to Moldovan political and civil society institutions and coalitions. Programs we hope will contribute to free and fair elections here in Moldova.
I am proud to represent the U.S. Government and the American people here in Moldova. And just as our founding fathers sought a better future for their descendents, the United States hopes to be able to help you -- the energetic and democratic people of Moldova -- create a better future for you and your children.
I look forward to continuing to work with you over the next year to -- as President Reagan put it -- “cultivate” the flower that is democracy here in Moldova.
Thank you very much and happy July 4th!
