Former U.S. Ambassador Heather M. Hodges Speeches
U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Heather M. Hodges’ Remarks on Independence Day 2004
July 2, 2004
Minister Lupu, distinguished guests, fellow Americans, it is a pleasure to be with you this evening to celebrate the independence of the United States.
I would like to thank the many American companies who made generous contributions to this event. We also would like to thank the music group “Impressions”; your performance of our countries’ national anthems was beautiful.
228 years ago, on July 4th America’s Founding Fathers declared the independence of a new nation based on the idea of “government of the people, by the people, [and] for the people.” But the America we know today was not created overnight. It took several years of trial and error with continued civic involvement before America became a well-functioning democracy.
I am reminded of something the late President Ronald Reagan once said, “Democracy is not a fragile flower, [but] it still needs cultivating.” I like this quotation because it illustrates the idea that creating a stable and prosperous democracy is a process -- that needs constant nurturing.
This is my first 4th of July here in Moldova. I cannot believe that it was nine months ago -- today -- that I arrived in this beautiful country. I have had the opportunity to work with many of you and I have traveled to many regions of Moldova. I have gained a greater appreciation for the programs we support here.
- I have been impressed by the Peace Corps Volunteers, who donate two years of their lives, sharing their skills and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
- I have attended the openings of several farm stores and agribusinesses supported through USAID projects. These were particularly exciting events since we believe that the success of private agricultural enterprise is an essential element for a prosperous future of Moldova.
- I have been to schools whose students are provided with a healthy lunch each day through a school lunch program supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, enabling the students to focus on their studies.
- I have participated in discussions -- most recently the Second Annual U.S.-Moldova Joint Economic Task Force -- aimed at improving the business climate in Moldova for both foreign and domestic investment.
- And I have observed the support provided by American organizations to Moldovan political and civil society institutions and coalitions. Programs we hope will contribute to free and fair elections here in Moldova.
I would like to thank all the people who work at the U.S. Embassy and on the many projects we support for their dedication and enthusiasm. I am proud to represent the United States and the American people here in Moldova. And just as America’s Founding Fathers sought a better future for their descendents, the United States hopes to continue to work in collaboration with you -- the energetic and democratic people of Moldova -- to create a better future for you and your children.
Thank you very much and happy 4th of July!
