Former Ambassador Pamela Hyde Smith Speeches
Ambassador Pamela Hyde Smith's remarks at the memorial concert commemorating victims of September 11, 2001 events. Organ Hall
September 11, 2003
Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you so very much for coming this evening. All my American compatriots and I deeply appreciate the sympathy you have demonstrated by attending this memorial concert. I would like to make special note of the gratitude the United States feels toward the government and people of Moldova for their compassionate and active responses to the tragedy of September 11 and in the war against terror. Before we listen to the music of Albinoni, Barber, and Faure, I would like to read from President Bush's proclamation on this two-year anniversary.
"Two years ago, more than three thousand innocent people lost their lives when a calm September morning was shattered by terrorists driven by hatred and destruction. The passage of time cannot erase the pain and devastation that were inflicted on that day. We will always remember those who were brutally taken from us. And we ask God to comfort the loved ones left behind; their courage and determination have inspired us."
This year, relatives of the victims have expressed a desire that people around the world will commemorate the events of September 11, 2001 with a day of service, volunteering help to one another. Let us think about how we can fulfill this wish, as we enjoy the concert. Thank you.
